Why Plant Drainage Matters (And How to Get It Right)

More houseplants are lost to overwatering than underwatering — and drainage is usually the real culprit. Here’s what’s actually happening, and how to get it right.
What drainage actually does
Roots need oxygen as much as they need water. When soil stays fully saturated for too long, the air pockets between soil particles fill with water instead of air, and roots start to suffocate. That’s root rot — it’s not really about “too much water,” it’s about water that has nowhere to go and nothing to displace it.
A drainage hole solves this by letting excess water escape after each watering, so the soil dries out between waterings instead of staying soggy.
If your planter has a drainage hole
This is the easy case. Water until it runs through the hole, let the excess drain out completely, and empty the saucer or tray underneath so the pot isn’t sitting in standing water. A raised or ridged tray — rather than a flat plastic saucer — helps here too, since it keeps the base of the pot slightly elevated and encourages airflow instead of trapping moisture directly against the bottom of the pot.
If your planter doesn’t have a drainage hole
Decorative planters without holes aren’t automatically a problem — you just have to be more deliberate. The most reliable approach is the “nursery pot” method: keep your plant in a plastic pot with drainage holes, and set that pot inside the decorative planter. Water it, let it drain in a sink, and then set it back inside. You get the aesthetics of the planter you actually want without the plant ever sitting in trapped water.
A quick way to check
Stick a finger an inch or two into the soil. If it’s still damp down there, hold off on watering — the roots don’t need it yet, and adding more water on top of already-wet soil is exactly how rot starts. Let the top couple of inches dry out between waterings for most common houseplants.
